In the latter half of the 19th century it was decided that, from the Meiji era on, each emperor's reign would constitute one era. That is to say, the year in which an Emperor ascended to the throne would be the first year of a new era, which would end on the event of his death or abdication. For 1,300 years, the name was traditionally drawn from classical Chinese literature, but, starting on April 2019, Reiwa breaks with this tradition by coming, instead, from Japanese poetry; the 7th century collection “Manyoshu”.
