Taisho Ryo-Zuma Tomesode Kimono
  • A wonderful, early Taisho, ryo-zuma, black tomesode kimono, with cranes and takarabune (treasure ship) plus golden kinkoma detailing (couched embroidery) and an unusual style of kiku mon (chrysanthemum crests). Made of high quality silk. Silk lining. Ryo-zuma means a mirror image style of design on the fronts of a tomesode, seen on pre WW2 kimonos. Few of this age and quality have survived in the excellent condition of this one.
  • The textile art is ryo-zuma, which is mirror image, on both fronts, there is a vast amount of textile art on the inner lower fronts too. Only the best quality kimonos had this, as the textile art costs thousands of pounds to have designed and hand applied and the artwork on the left front and on the inside of the fronts isn't seen when it is worn, only the wearer knows it is there. As the wearer walked, others my get just a hint of the fact that there was artwork was on the right front, if the left front, lying on top, flicked open a little as they walked, they would, however, have no idea about the artwork inside it. Only the richest people could afford such extravagance.
  • This inner design is called Tomohakkake, which means having a continuation of outer textile art onto the lining; tomo means 'including' and hakkake means 'lower lining of a kimono'. Only the best, highest quality, most expensive kimonos have this, as not too many people can afford to have hand applied textile art put on to be the hidden inside of their garments, only the very wealthy owned these.
  • Large, very detailed figures, with takarabune (treasure ship) festival carts and flower carts.
  • The silk is wonderfully soft and supple
  • Made in Japan
  • Fully lined
  • There are specks of foxing on the lining, as is to be expected of this age. See photos below. Foxing is a characteristic of antique silks but it does not weaken the fabric, it just creates tan speckles. The foxing does not detract from the beauty or quality of the kimono at all
  • If the black looks grey or shaded in the pictures, it is just the photos, it is a lovely deep, smooth black
  • **If shown with a sash, the sash is not included; for display purposes only, to let you see it closed, however, all kimono require an obi or some sort of sash to hold them closed; these are always bought separately. Think of it like a skirt and blouse, you can't wear either on its own, you buy them separately and mix and match The Japanese take great pains to store their traditional garments with the utmost care, which is why they stay in such exceptional condition.

Condition:
Excellent - some foxing on its lining- see details above and photo
