Shunga is an ancient, Japanese tradition in art. Believed to have originated because, in the Edo era, men had to stay most of the year away from home, leaving their wives behind. Shunga was intended to help deal with their desires, reducing the likelihood of straying. Shunga was also given to brides to be, to teach them about their forthcoming private lives, although perhaps their images had slightly less exaggerated body parts than many shunga artworks have.
