Shibori Vortex - Long Burgundy Haori
  • A 1920s-1930s, pure silk, Japanese haori. Richly coloured silk, with a gorgeous woven pattern of chrysanthemums (kiku) among concentric diamonds and shibori vortices (swirling water pattern created with tiny, tie-dyed [shibor] dots)
  • Extra long with extra deep sleeves and extra soft, supple silk, as was the fashion in the 20s and 30s
  • Awase (lined). The lower lining is the same silk as the outside, the upper lining is a different, lighter silk, as is standard in lined haori
  • Exquisitely hand tailored. A fabulous quality garment
  • A traditional, hand tailored garment, with raw seam ends hidden inside and out
  • Has shitsuke, which is large, very loose white stitching around some edges, to keep the haori flat and neat during storage. Those stiches just get pulled out gently before use. The Japanese take great care of these garments, as they are incredibly expensive and treasured, so store them with great care, which is why so many of this age and older are still in fabulous, strong condition today, with a long life ahead of them.
  • Perfect worn over a kimono and absolutely stunning worn with trousers, skirts or leggings. Long enough, perhaps, to wear as a short wrap dress
  • Made and bought in Japan
  • The Japanese take great pains to store their traditional garments with the utmost care, which is why they stay in such exceptional condition. Some of my Japanese garments have large, white stitching (shitsuke) round the edges. The Japanese put these stitches in to keep the edges flat during long periods of storage, these stitches just get pulled out before wearing the garment
  • Please be aware that different monitors display colour slightly differently, therefore the colour in the photos and description is a guide only

  • Japanese haori; a long kimono jacket, with swinging kimono sleeves. Traditionally worn loose over kimono and obi, fastened with a front tie (haori himo) on centre front edge, but also lovely worn with contemporary clothing, such as jeans, skirts and dresses, either worn loose or cinched in with a belt or sash. So beautifully made, with hidden raw edges, that they can even be worn inside out, with the often beautifully decorative upper lining on show.

Much more haori infornation can be found in the Kimono Information section of the website (page 13, "Haori Kimono Jackets - Japan's Secret Treasure"). Worth a read it prior to puchase.
