Quaint Urushi Scenery Haori Kimono Jacket - Wafuku 1
  • A black silk haori, with little, quaint, Japanese scenery. The woven design is done in urushi, a traditional Japanese lacquer used to coat the silk threads. This haori is gorgeously soft silk. A spectacular garment.
  • The large white stitches on this haori are just shitsuke (large, loose, white, basting stitches). The Japanese put these in to keep the edges neat during storage; they are easy to remove and just get pulled out before wearing
  • Made and bought in Japan
  • In Japan, haori are not normally worn with a sash or belt, they are worn loosely, on top of a kimono and obi, but they also look great with a belt and with western world clothing; see examples shown below this garment's photos
  • You can wear most lined haoris inside out, as they are so exquisitely made that all the seams are hidden both inside and out, and this lining would look fabulous worn on the outside. You can see an example of a haori worn inside out in the photographs below this haori/s pictures, further down this page and on my blog here
  • Type: A hitotsu-mon haori. Garments with mon (crests) are divided into three types: itsutsu-mon (5 mon), mitsu-mon (3 mon) and hitotsu-mon (1 mon). The more mon it has, the more formal the occasion at which it may be worn

  • Japanese haori; a long kimono jacket, with swinging kimono sleeves. Traditionally worn loose over kimono and obi, fastened with a front tie (haori himo) on centre front edge, but also lovely worn with contemporary clothing, such as jeans, skirts and dresses, either worn loose or cinched in with a belt or sash. So beautifully made, with hidden raw edges, that they can even be worn inside out, with the often beautifully decorative upper lining on show.

Much more haori infornation can be found in the Kimono Information section of the website (page 13, "Haori Kimono Jackets - Japan's Secret Treasure"). Worth a read it prior to puchase.
