- A very special kimono, in glorious deep purple, with frolicking gosho ningyo. Gosho ningyo means Imperial doll(s), they are always plump and very white like porcelain dolls. It is an old, traditional, much loved Japanese motif with a history going back 400 years when they soon became popular gifts for the daimyo (feudal lords). Gosho dolls are recreations of children at play and are said to bring good luck to their owners. Their distinctive style is highly reminiscent of the masks worn by actors during Noh theater performances. Often posing with props and objects, each doll carries with it a different meaning, such as veneration, joy, delight and fortune.
- This is a yuzen kimono, which means one where the textile art has been painted on by hand by Japanese artisans. You can imagine how expensive it is to purchase a new garment with that. Kimonos like this cost more than haute couture dresses. A garment such as this is a labour of love created by traditional craftsmanship
- Made and bought in Japan
- Sash not included, for display purposes only
- Pure silk inside and out
- Awase (fully lined)
Condition:
Excellent externally. The lining has some foxing. Foxing does not weaken the silk, it just discolours it and is often seen on lining silks of garments stored in hot humid conditions, such as the Japanese summer.
Measurements:
Sleeve end to sleeve end 128cm
Sleeve seam to sleeve seam 62cm
Sleeve depth 47.5cm
Length 159.4cm
Sizing:
Japanese clothing is usually of adjustable fit, being mostly wrap-over or tie-to-fit items, so most garments fit a range of sizes. Because of this (and only really knowing my own size anyway) I can't really advise anyone on the fit. Please judge fit from the measurements given. Measure from centre back of neck, along shoulder and down the arm to the wrist, then double that and compare it with the sleeve end measurement to judge sleeve length.
