Glorious Tsukesage Kimono
  • An absolutely exquisite pink tsukesage kimono, with flower and bamboo design on the sumptuous outer silk
  • Pure silk lining too
  • Entirely hand tailored, with such beautiful textile art (yuzen), hand applied by skilled artisans. This will have cost thousands of pounds when new.
  • An awase (lined) kimono. The lining is somewhat yellowed, not weakened, just a vintage patina that sometimes occurs on silk, particularly the light silk used on linings, caused by a combination of age and the humidity of the Japanese summers. Of course, it doesn't show when you are wearing the kimono. It has reduced the price massively, so makes this work of art quite a bargain
  • Type: A tsukesage kimono. Tsukesage are visiting wear kimonos. The pattern round the base does not join up over seams the of tsukesage kimonos. They are more formal than iro muji and komon kimonos and a bit less formal than houmongi kimonos and much less formal than tomesode and furisode kimonos.
  • Made in Japan

Condition:
Excellent - some yellowing to upper lining, which has massively lowered the price for this extremely high quality kimono. It is, however, just foxing, a patina seen on lining silks of many vintage and antique kimonos, especially those that have been stored in hot, humid conditions, such as the summers in some parts of Japan, it does not weaken the silk, just discolours it.

Measurements:
Sleeve end to sleeve end 125cm
Sleeve seam to sleeve seam 61 cm
Length 159cm

Sizing:
Japanese clothing is usually of adjustable fit, being mostly wrap-over or tie-to-fit items, so most garments fit a range of sizes. Because of this (and only really knowing my own size anyway) I can't really advise anyone on the fit. Please judge fit from the measurements given. Measure from centre back of neck, along shoulder and down the arm to the wrist, then double that and compare it with the sleeve end measurement to judge sleeve length. If shown modelled, the woman in the photos is 125 cm from wrist to wrist.

  • Kimono require a sash to hold them closed. This is always bought separately. Men usually wear a kaku obi with their kimono or, casually at home, a soft heko obi

Because of this (and only really knowing my own size anyway) I can't really advise anyone on the fit. Please judge fit from the measurements given. Check length given for the garment, then measure from base of back of your neck down to judge that length on you

Some of my garments have white stitching (shitsuke) round the outside edges to keep the edges flat during long periods of storage, these stitches just get pulled out before wearing the garment

Cleaning: Be very cautious about washing kimonos. All cleaning is done entirely at your own risk, as is standard with all vintage garments and items. I would advise only dry cleaning

Colour: Please be aware that different monitors display colour slightly differently. Therefore the colour in the photos and description is a guide only
