Collector's Item - Boy's Silk 1920s Kimono
  • A rare, antique, baby boy’s kimono, ideal for the collector. Made in the 1920s or thereabouts. It shows samurai at court and traveling (you see one sitting down, with a reed hat on his head) and so on.
  • a Miyamairi kimono. The kimono is worn draped over the baby, rather than worn by it. Miyamairi is a traditional Shinto rite of passage in Japan for newborns. Approximately one month after birth, parents and grandparents bring the child to a Shinto shrine, to express gratitude to the deities for the birth of a baby and have a shrine priest pray for their health and happiness.

  • A wonderful display item, with a great print and a good size for display
  • Made of jinken (similar to rayon), a natural fibre material that was often used to emulate silk, with a cotton lining
  • There are some marks, light specks on the blue and marks on the design at the front, plus tiny slightly weak spots and some foxing on the lining. This is reflected in the price. Foxing doesn't weaken the textile, it is just age spots from long term storage in a humid climate. It is nonetheless in excellent condition for its age.
  • Made and bought in Japan
  • Japanese children traditionally wear them with big tucks loosely stitched into the outside of the shoulders and round the waist. The tucks, if still in the garments, are very loosely stitched and can be easily removed to enlarge  the garments or open them out for displaying.
  • Kimono Fronts: Kimonos are worn with left front on top of right, by both men and women. The Japanese use the phrase phrase, ‘left over rice’, to remember this
  • Please be aware that different monitors display colour slightly differently. Therefore the colour in the photos and description is a guide only

Condition:
Excellent for its age, however it does have marks –  see photos and description

Measurements approx:
Sleeve end to sleeve end 102cm
Sleeve seam to sleeve seam 52cm
Length 91.5cm

Japanese clothing is usually of adjustable fit, being mostly wrap-over or tie-to-fit items, so most garments fit a range of sizes. Because of this (and only really knowing my own size anyway) I can't really advise anyone on the fit. Please judge fit from the measurements given.Measure from centre back of neck, along shoulder and down the arm to the wrist, then double that and compare it with the sleeve end measurement to judge sleeve length.
